Miami-Dade County Jail

The Miami-Dade County Jail system is actually a jail system composed of four currently-operating jail facilities: the Metro West Detention Center, the Pre-Trial Detention Center, the Training and Treatment Center, the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, and the currently inoperative Women’s Detention Center. Together, these five facilities hold inmates who have just been arrested, who are incarcerated prior to trial, or who are detained their post-conviction for sentences of less than a year.  In addition, these jails may hold inmates who are serving sentences at other jail facilities but are needed at the Miami-Dade County courthouse to provide testimony in criminal cases or civil lawsuits.  These facilities have approximately 5,642 adult inmates.  In addition to the jail facilities, the Miami-Dade County Jail includes a work release center and a medical unit located at Jackson Memorial Hospital.  Although juvenile offenders are processed through the Juvenile Services Department, the Miami-Dade County Jail operates a boot camp program for youthful offenders.

The Metro West Detention Center holds males at all custody levels.  With a capacity of 3098 inmates, it is the largest facility in the Miami-Dade County Corrections systems.  It is located in Doral, Florida.  The Pre-Trial Detention Center is a booking facility, which means it does not have long-term inmates, but merely processes inmates immediately after arrest and holds them until they can be transferred to another facility.  It temporarily houses all levels of inmates.  It is located in Miami.  The Training and Treatment Center in Miami houses adult male offenders in a range of classifications.  It has 1,265 beds, and it offers different types of programming for qualified offenders.   The Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami has 1,300 beds and houses both male and female offenders.  As of 2012, there are no inmates at the Women’s Detention Center; instead, those inmates are now-housed at the coed Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

In addition to the jail facilities, the Miami-Dade County Jail has two other types of supervision.  One is a boot camp program.  The boot camp program is often considered to be a juvenile program, but that label is inaccurate, as the boot camp is designed for offenders from 14 to 24.  Therefore, a sentenced adult in the Miami-Dade County Jail system may be at the boot camp.  In addition, the jail offers community supervision options for both pre-trial detainees and convicted inmates.

While many county-level jails are run by sheriff’s offices, the size of the Miami-Dade County Jail system makes that impractical.  Instead, the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department operates the county’s jails.  It is the eighth largest jail system in the country, with somewhere between 4,300 to 4,500 persons incarcerated daily in one of the four detention facilities, plus defendants under community supervision or work release and in the boot camp program.  Daniel Junior is serving as the Department’s interim director.

The Bureau also provides police clearance letters, detailing criminal history information, for the purpose of: citizenship/immigration, employment, adoption, education/school, investigation, legal/lawyer/court, and personal reasons.

Mugshots:

The Miami-Dade County Department of Corrections and Rehabilitations has some mugshots online.  They are accessible using the inmate locator system.  The individual inmate records include identifying information such as name, date of birth, race, sex, location, charges, bond amount, jail number, booking date and a booking photograph or mugshot of the person.

Jail Visitation:

All of the Miami-Dade County Jail facilities are subject to the same visitation rules, but procedures may vary by facility.  None of the facilities in the Miami-Dade County Jail system permit contact visits.  Instead, all visits are conducted via video monitors.  Visitors must still comply with all applicable visitation guidelines, even though there will be no contact with the inmates.  These guidelines include appropriate clothing, complying with a search, limitations on the number of visitors and age of visitors at each visit, and limitations on the duration of each visit.

All visitors must comply with established security measures (metal detector devises, frisk and canine searches, etc.) prior to being permitted to enter the secure area of the detention facility; visitors who do not comply may not be allowed to enter.  If a visitor has a medical or religious claims, which prohibit exposure to metal detector devices, the visitor must provide the medical documentation if applicable, and consent to a frisk search that will be conducted in a discreet area.

The jail’s dress code is similar to other jail dress codes.  Visitors must wear appropriate undergarments and are to remain fully clothed for the entire visit.  Visitors may not wear clothing that resembles a correctional employee (officer or civilian) uniform or an inmate uniform.  Inmate uniforms include orange, red, or white-colored scrubs.  Visitors may not wear hats or head coverings unless medically necessary or for religious purposes.  Visitors may not wear tight fitting, see-through, provocative and/or revealing clothing of any kind, or sheer, netting, torn or frayed attire, bathing suits, body suits, athletic shorts, hot pants.  Visitors may not reveal more than 2 inches of cleavage, more than 4 inches of the back, or any portion of the abdomen; halter tops, tube tops, tank tops, spaghetti straps, sleeveless/muscle shirts, or strapless shirts. Visitors may not wear shorts more than 3 inches above the knee or skirts/dresses more than 2 inches above the knee.  If a skirt or dress has a slit, it may not reach higher than mid-thigh when seated.  Visitors may not wear non-prescription sunglasses or hooded garments or clothing with offensive lettering. All visitors must wear shoes at all times, but cannot wear flip-flops, high heels more than 3 inches or sandals which are not secured to the ankle by at least one strap are prohibited.

Minor visitors must be accompanied by adults.  Visitors under 17 need a birth certificate.  In addition, if a minor is school age, the minor will need a school I.D. in order to visit.
