Main Jail Bureau which is also referred to as Broward County Jail, was built in 1985 at a cost of $41.6 million. The original facility was to hold 864 local inmates. After increases in prison population the facility was expanded in 1988 and again in 1992. Now Main Jail can house up to 1538 inmates under the supervision of 400 employees. This facility serves as central intake or the booking location for all Broward County law enforcement agencies. The warden of this facility is Captain Veronica Carroll.
Broward County Main Jail Bureau is an all-male facility with most inmates awaiting trials or sentencing. The facility is a minimum - maximum security prison, dangerous inmates and escape risks residing in the maximum security housing. Main Jail Bureau also has separate housing for about 65 juvenile males who are awaiting their trials in adult court.

April 27, 2016 - Bryant S. Jean-Pierre was charged with aggravated battery after he attacked doctor Mariela Lazar who is assigned to Broward County Jail as she left work. Bryant was there with his father to bail out his brother Pitt when an argument broke out.
