The Broward County Sheriff’s Office maintains the Broward County Jail.  The Broward County Jail has four facilities, plus an intake facility: the Central Intake Bureau (Booking), the Main Jail, the Joseph V. Conte Facility, the North Broward Bureau, and the Paul Rein Detention Facility. 

The Main Jail is a maximum security facility.  Located next to the Broward County Courthouse in downtown Fort Lauderdale, this facility can house up to 1,538 inmates.  The main jail facility is all-males, and holds mostly pre-trial detainees, though it may also hold inmates who have been sentenced to serve up to one year.  The main jail is a maximum security facility because the inmates houses there are considered to be high-risk, whether due to demonstrated violent or dangerous behavior, perceived flight risk, or the nature of the charges against them.  In addition, the Main Jail houses some juveniles who are awaiting trial in adult courts, but they are housed separately from adult inmates.

In addition to maximum security, the Mail Jail facility includes the Central Intake Bureau.  The Central Intake Bureau processes incoming arrestees from all Broward County law enforcement agency.  Arrests are also processed at remote booking sites in Pompano Beach, Davie, and Hollywood.  The Central Intake Bureau’s processing allows for the classification of inmates, so that they can be placed in the appropriate Broward County Jail facility.  In addition to processing arrests, the Central Intake Bureau is responsible for pre-magistrate holding, court activities, confinement status, releasing, hospital details, and transportation of inmates. The Central Intake Bureau also handles inter-facility transfers, custody transfers and custody releases to the state prison system, U.S. Marshalls, other governmental agencies and court ordered programs.

The Joseph V. Conte Facility is an all-male, medium-custody facility that mainly holds pre-trial detainees.  It is a direct supervision facility, which means that deputies are stationed inside housing units and interact directly with inmates.  All services from meals to medical care are provided within the housing units.  The facility is known for providing inmate healthcare services, including counseling and addiction services, and has a 30-day substance abuse program.  It houses 1,328 inmates.

The North Broward Bureau is a minimum to medium security, special needs facility housing male and female special needs inmates, female protective custody inmates, and female juveniles.  It has a capacity of 1,200 inmates.  The goal of this facility is to provide mental health, medical services, and other special services for inmates whose needs cannot be met in general population.

The Paul Rein Detention Facility is a direct supervision facility with 1,020 inmate capacity.  The Broward County Sheriff’s Office operates two programs for inmate at this facility: a Substance Abuse Program and a Life Skills Program.  In addition, the Chaplain’s Office operates a Lifestyles Spiritual Unit at the facility. 

Together, these facilities handle detention for Broward County.  Although most detainees are in the county’s custody, some of them are federal, state, or other local jurisdiction inmates.

Inmates may receive mail through the U.S. Postal Service and through some private delivery services.  Incoming mail is delivered to inmates Monday through Friday.  Contraband items include, but are not limited to, money, checks, inappropriate photos, matches, lighter, cigarettes, chewing gum, and jewelry.  While mail from legal representative is opened and searched, it is only opened in the inmate’s presence.  Inmates can receive letters and cards.  Depending on the nature of the unauthorized item, it may be placed in inmate property, returned to sender, or disposed of.

Arrest Records:

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has some arrest information available on line.  The most detailed arrest information is for currently incarcerated defendants.  The inmate list not only tells you if an inmate is incarcerated and his or her jail location, but also the charges against the defendant, and a mugshot.  In addition, the Broward County Sheriff Office’s Records/Warrants division provides local background checks and copies of accident or event reports for incidents occurring in Broward County.  However, if a law enforcement agency from another agency, such as the state highway patrol or a municipality in Broward County, took the report, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office will not have that information.

Broward County Jail Mugshots:

The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has some arrest information available on line.  The most detailed arrest information is for currently incarcerated defendants.  The inmate list not only tells you if an inmate is incarcerated and his or her jail location, but also the charges against the defendant, and a mugshot.

Jail Visitation:

All of the Broward County Jail facilities are subject to the same visitation rules, but procedures may vary by facility.  Visiting hours are restricted to specific times for each facility, and further broken down by housing area.  Updated visitation schedules can be found on the individual jail facility websites maintained by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.  Each inmate may have one two-hour visit per week.  Each visit is restricted to two visitors: either two adults or one minor accompanied by an adult.  Every adult visitor must present government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license, military identification, passport or state-issued ID card, Visitors who do not have proper identification will not be permitted to visit.  All visitors must be appropriately dressed. Shoes, shirts and appropriate underclothing must be worn. Visitors wearing suggestive clothing, transparent fabric, short-shorts or mini-skirts will not be permitted to visit.  All minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, who will be required to present a birth certificate or a legal document to prove guardianship.  No visitors who appear under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be permitted to visit.  No visitors who leave the visitation area during the visitation will be permitted to rejoin the visitation. Visitors cannot take anything from or give anything to the inmates.

At the Main Jail, video visitation begins at 7:15am and runs through 8:15pm.  Registration for visitation is on a first-come first serve basis.  Each housing unit has assigned visitation times and weekdays, so you need to know an inmate’s housing unit to find out when you can visit.

At the Joseph V. Conte Center, visitation is from 3:30pm to 10:00pm, but each housing unit has assigned visitation times and weekdays, so you need to know an inmate’s housing unit to find out when you can visit.

At the North Broward Bureau, visitation is from 3:30pm to 8:30pm.Each housing unit has assigned visitation times and weekdays, so you need to know an inmate’s housing unit to find out when you can visit.

At the Central Intake Bureau, inmates are being processed and there are no general visitation hours.

At the Paul Rein Detention Facility, visitation is from 3:30pm to 10:00pm, but each housing unit has assigned visitation times and weekdays, so you need to know an inmate’s housing unit to find out when you can visit.

Inmate Phone Privileges:

Inmates cannot receive incoming telephone calls and BSO employees are not permitted to deliver personal messages to inmates. Once an inmate receives his or her housing assignment, he or she can contact family and friends two ways.  The first is by calling collect from phones in the jail; family and friends must be willing to accept the charges.  The second is by setting up a direct bill/ prepaid account for phone calls through Securus Technologies.  You can reach Securus Technologies by phone at 877-800-5729 or online at www.securustech.net.  You may also contact Securus to block or unblock your phone.

Inmate Trust Accounts / Commissary:

Family and friends can deposit money into inmate trust accounts in a number of ways.  However, you should not make any deposits until an inmate has received a permanent housing assignment.  The Broward County Jail no longer uses SmartDeposit.com.  Instead, friends and family can use lobby kiosks, located at the Main Jail, Paul Rein Detention Facility, the Joseph V. Conte Facility, and the North Broward Bureau.  Lobby hours for deposits are 7:15am through 10:00pm.  These deposits must be cash-only, but the lobbies have ATM facilities so that you can get cash.

In addition to cash deposits on the kiosks, you can use Western Union to make deposits online, in person, or by phone.  You can use credit cards for online or phone deposits.  The online website is www.westernunion.com/us/en/send-inmate/start.html.   You must select the Broward Sheriff Inmate Bank as the facility name.  You must have the inmate’s name, arrest number, the code city and state (CANTEEN, FL), date of birth, and purpose (commissary).  You can send money orders to inmates, but not cash, for inmates to deposit into their commissary accounts.

Bail Information:

The Broward County Jail makes bail/ bond information available on its inmate list.  You can also call (954) 831-5900 or visit the information window, which is open 24-hours-a-day, located in the lobby of the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail facility.  To post a cash bond, in person, you take the bond money or a cashier’s check to the Main Jail Facility located at 555 S.E, 1st Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33301. No personal checks or personal money orders will be accepted.  There are no service fees for an in-person cash bond.  You can also post bond using Western Union, in person at a Western Union location, by phone at 800-634-3422, or online at www.westernunion.com.  You must make the bond payable to the Sheriff of Broward county, code city and state COPS/FL and use the arrest number an inmate last/first name as the account number.  Service fees apply for bonds posted via Western Union.  You can also pay bond online at www.GovPayNow.com using a credit or debit card.  You need to have inmate information to pay the bond, which you can find using the inmate locator.  You need the defendant’s name, arrest or CIS number and date of birth.  A service fee applies.  You can also pay bond over the phone at 1-877-EZBAIL5 (1-877-392-2455).  A service fee applies.  If you need to post a surety bond rather than a cash bond, you can use a licensed surety bond agent to post the bond.
