Iron County Jail in Utah

The Iron County Jail system is a jail in Iron County Utah, which is run by the Iron County Sheriff’s Office.  The Iron County Sheriff is responsible for protecting Iron County citizens by providing a secure holding facility for people legally confined in the county.  The Iron County Sheriff’s second priority for jail inmates is to instill a concept of personal responsibility for its prisoners.

The Iron County Jail provides for public safety primarily by providing secure housing for detainees.  Detainees include pretrial detainees and un-sentenced inmates awaiting judicial actions, inmates convicted of misdemeanor offenses, convicted felons, juveniles detained as a result of juvenile court orders, and any other detainees as required by state law.

To provide a secure facility, the Iron County Jail provides care and services designed to meet basic inmate needs.  It also has policies and procedures in place to reduce the risk of inmate violence, both towards guards and towards other inmates.

The Iron County Jail also seeks to promote personal responsibility among its detainees.  It does so through a number of programs, including: work programs, educational programs that focus on like skills and attitudes, incentives for good behavior, and accountability for misconduct.

Visitors must be 18 years of age or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian; they cannot be accompanied by other adults.  There is no food or drink allowed in the visiting room.  Visitors must wear modest clothing and what is considered modest is up the discretion of jail officials.  While the jail does not have an official dress code, other jail dress codes prohibit short-shorts, mini-skirts, tank tops, any cleavage-revealing shirts, any shirts that reveal the stomach, and sheer clothing.  Visitors are also prohibited from bringing most personal belongings into visitation.  To simplify the process, visitors are encouraged to leave personal items at home or securely stored in their vehicles during visitation.  If you have any questions about whether or not personal items are permitted during visitation, contact the jail prior to visitation. Visitors may be denied the right to visitation by jail personnel.  Intoxicated or disruptive visitors will not be permitted to visit an inmate.

There is no charge for on-site visits.  On-site visiting hours are Thursday from 1:00PM to 4:30PM and 6:00PM to 9:30PM; Saturday from 8:00AM to 11:30AM, 1:00PM to 4:30PM, and 6:00PM to 9:30PM; and Sunday from 8:00AM to 11:30AM, 1:00PM to 4:30PM, and 6:00PM to 9:30PM.

You can also visit an inmate from home.  There are fees that apply for at-home visits; these fees are covered in the registration office.  At-home visiting hours are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 7:45AM to 11:30AM, 12:45PM to 4:30PM, and 5:45 PM to 9:30 PM.

To schedule an on-site or at-home visit, you can use the computer terminal in the jail lobby or access the visit registration site at www.Securustech.net/VideoVisitation.  You must have a valid photo ID to register for at-home visits.  After registering for a visit, you will receive a PIN and a visit terminal number; you will need this information in order to visit.

Inmate Phone Privileges:

Inmates cannot receive incoming telephone calls.  Inmates will have access to telephones to make outgoing phone calls.  These telephones will be turned off from 11:30AM to 12:30PM, from 4:30PM to 5:30PM, and from 9:00PM until after morning inspections have been passed.  All inmate telephone calls will be billed collect.  All telephone calls will be recorded and may be monitored.  Telephone calls are limited to 15 minutes.  Conference calls, forwarded calls, three-way calls, or call waiting features will terminate the call.

In addition to phone calls, inmates can keep in contact with their family through email.  At this time, the email an inmate program only allows friends, family, and associates to send incoming emails to inmates.  This program is offered through a paid subscription service, after a successful trial run as a free service.  To sign up for the email an inmate program, visit the Iron County Jail’s Email an Inmate page.

Send Inmates Money / Commissary / Trust Accounts:

Inmate commissary accounts are a way for inmates to access basic food and hygiene items that are not provided by the Iron County Jail, during the period of their incarceration.  Commissary services are offered to all inmates, regardless of status, except for those inmates who are in a lockdown or whose medical status conflicts with commissary.  These commissary services are, however, considered a privilege and may be rescinded by the jail.

To make deposits in person, you may go to the Iron County Jail and use the lobby kiosk.  The lobby kiosk takes cash deposits and debit or credit cards and is accessible 24 hours a day.  The kiosk is located in the jail lobby.

You have additional options for deposits to an inmate’s commissary trust accounts and phone accounts.  You can also deposit funds online at www.jailatm.com.  You need an inmate’s identifying information to make online deposits.  That information includes state (Utah), county (Iron), the inmate’s number that has been provided by the Iron County Jail.

You can also send a deposit to the jail in the mail.  These deposits can be cashier’s checks, money orders, or government checks.  They are sent to the jail mailing address, but must be in an envelope marked with the prisoner’s name and “for deposit only.”  The money order or check should be the only thing in the envelope.

Bail Information

Not all inmates are eligible for bond, but if an inmate has bondable charges, he or she can bond out at any time 24-7, 365 days.  The Iron County Jail website maintains a roster of local bail bondsmen if you need professional assistance in posting a surety bond.  Once bond is posted, an inmate can be released and will be given the date for his next court appearance.  Failure to appear at the next court appearance can result in forfeiture of the bond amount if a cash bond, and other penalties if it is a surety bond.

The Iron County Jail accepts cash or surety bonds at the following address:

Iron County Jail- Bonds
2136 N Main
Cedar City, UT 84721

A cash bond is a bond for the entire amount of the bond.  While called a cash bond, it may actually be posted by cash, cashier’s check or money order.  Cashier’s checks and money orders should be made payable to whichever court has jurisdiction.  No personal checks are accepted for cash bonds.  You must have a government-issued  photo ID in order to post bond.

Cash bonds usually reflect the entire amount of a bond, though many people can have either a cash bond or a surety bond to secure their release.  In some circumstances, bond will be designated as a cash-only bond, which means that the bond must be a cash bond and that the court will not allow a surety bond to secure a detainee’s pre-trial release.

You can also post out-of-county cash bonds for another county’s charges.  You can use money orders, cashier’s checks, cash, or traveler’s checks to post these out-of-county cash bonds.  Do not fill in the payable part of the negotiable instrument until you come to post bond; an employee at the bond office will instruct you how to fill out the instrument when you post the bond.

Surety bonds are bonds that are posted through an approved bonding company, which will charge a fee for their services.

Conclusion

The Iron County Jail system services Iron County Utah and is run by the Iron County Sheriff’s Office.  Detainees include pretrial detainees and un-sentenced inmates awaiting judicial actions, inmates convicted of misdemeanor offenses, convicted felons, juveniles detained as a result of juvenile court orders, and any other detainees as required by state law.

The Iron County Jail places a significant emphasis on personal responsibility.  To further this interest, they offer a number of different programs, which they believe are tailored to increase inmate personal responsibility while incarcerated.  These programs include work programs and educational programs as well as life skills training and reward and punishment systems for good or bad behavior during incarceration.
