Augusta State Medical Prison is a close security prison which is located in Richmond County, Georgia and is classified as a state facility. This institution began accepting inmates once original construction was completed and service started in 1983 but has been renovated/expanded since that time. Augusta State Medical Prison has a prison capacity of 1326 inmates. Prisoners at Augusta State Medical Prison are housed in separate areas depending on the crimes they committed, their current risk assessment, and their behavior. This facility is currently under the supervision of Georgia Department of Corrections and houses both male and female offenders.
The purpose of this facility is to provide specialized medical and mental health services for male and female inmates. This facility also serves as the release site for sex offenders and is the host facility for Augusta Transitional Center. The building has an open dormitory format which consists of four living units which have been divided into two separate units. One of the dorms contains 519 beds with 192 of them assigned to inmates that require assisted living. There are also several nursing units, single patient rooms, a crisis unit, and dining hall.
