Ascension Parish Jail

Facility Information

The Ascension Parish Jail, is the Parish level detention facility for Ascension Parish, Louisiana.  It is located in Donaldsonville.  The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office is responsible for running the Ascension Parish Jail.

The first Ascension Parish Jail was built in 1806 on property donated by William Donaldson, the founder of Donaldsonville.  The second jail was built in 1810, also on land donated by William Donaldson.  That jail was destroyed by fire in 1827.  The third jail was built in the same location and used for detention facilities until it was condemned in 1850.  The police jury planned the fourth jail, which ended up being the parish’s first brick jail.  However, it was destroyed during the bombing of Donaldsonville during the Civil War.  The fifth jail, which continues to existence today as the “old jail” was built in 1867, and once served as both the courthouse and the jail until 1976.  The first jail built on the site of the current jail was occupied in 1976.  That jail held 54 offenders.  The jail was expanded, a project completed in 1989, and that increased the capacity of the jail to 192 offenders.  The jail was accredited by the American Correctional Association in 2003.  In 2008, the jail conducted its second expansion project, resulting in a capacity in 572 offenders.  Major Paul Hall became warden in 2011.

Sheriff Jeff Wiley, who was first elected to the position of sheriff in 1996, is currently serving his fifth term as the Sheriff of Ascension Parish.  The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office has become one of the most technologically savvy in the state, which is nationally recognized for its organization, communication, and crime fighting expertise.  It has become a local model for law enforcement.  Sheriff Wiley is even the President of the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association.

The Ascension Parish Jail does not publish rules for inmate mail.  However, almost all jails follow the same basic guidelines for inmate mail.  We have included those guidelines so that you can increase the likelihood that the Ascension Parish Jail will allow your mail to be delivered to the inmate.

All mail should have complete return addresses and mailing addresses.  These addresses should include the full name and mailing address.  Mail should be sent from the actual sender and not from a third party.  Mail sent by third parties may violate the jail’s rules, resulting in the letter being returned.

All mail sent to the Ascension Parish Jail is screened before being given to inmates.  Inmates cannot receive contraband in the mail.  Contraband includes, but is not limited to the following items: weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, racist materials, gang-related materials, pornography, encourages people to send mail to prisoners.  That type of mail will not be delivered to the inmate and can subject the sender to prosecution.

There are other items that are also considered contraband, but may not be criminal behavior.  For example, inmates generally cannot receive packages, food, drinks, snacks, mail with stamps other than the one used for mailing, newspapers, books, glitter, perfumes, lipstick, lotions, bodily fluids, clippings from newspapers, Polaroid photographs, greeting cards with music or any type of plastic or metal in them, or books.  While inmates are generally allowed to receive photographs, there may be a limit on the size of the photographs the inmate can receive, the type of photograph, or the number of photographs that an inmate can receive.

Generally, inmates cannot receive writing or art supplies in the mail, but have to purchase their writing or art supplies through commissary.
