Recent News for Covington Police Department:

Sep 6, 2016 - Meth bust made during traffic stop. A suspicious vehicle seen driving repeatedly around a gun range led police to conduct a traffic stop and eventually arrest the driver on a charge of possession of methamphetamine.

The incident occurred about 2:50 a.m. on Aug. 20. According to a report from the Covington Police Department, patrol units were dispatched to the Shots Fired Indoor Gun Range on Washington Street in response to a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck seen circling the business several times, then pulling up behind the building.

As one officer arrived on scene, he saw a four-door Silverado matching the description at the stop sign on Flat Shoals Road with a male driver and two female passengers inside. The truck turned onto Washington Street and a second officer joined the first and they made a traffic stop.

The driver was identified as Ralph Junior Blackmon, 47, of Covington. He told the officers they were looking for a house on South Nelson Drive where his backseat female passenger could get a tattoo. All three were asked to exit the truck, then the officer asked Blackmon for permission to search the truck and he allegedly granted permission.

The officer allegedly found a green bag laying in the middle of the floorboard. Inside the bag was a set of electronic scales, a camouflage flashlight with a clear bag inside containing suspected methamphetamine, a silver tin containing a plastic bagg with suspected methamphetamine inside, and several hypodermic needles.

When asked who the bag belonged to, Blackmon allegedly said it was his. He was arrested and transported to the Newton County Detention Center, where he was charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.
